One of the goals for Phase II of the Sampler Archive Project is to partner with a variety of cultural and historical institutions with collections of schoolgirl samplers and related girlhood embroideries. With each collaborating institution we developed an individualized documentation plan designed to fit their unique resources, existing commitments, and the status of their collections. The process of documenting the samplers in these institutional collections is both productive and ongoing. As the documentation process for each collection is finalized and verified by the contributing organization, the objects will appear in the Sampler Archive database and be available to the public for browsing and searching.
Our contributing partner institutions for Phase II are listed below alphabetically, followed by the number of schoolgirl embroideries currently being documented for inclusion in the Sampler Archive, the total being 1214 objects. Some of these institutions have larger collections of American samplers and pictorial embroideries than indicated below, and will be submitting objects for documentation and inclusion in the Sampler Archive in multiple phases. Funding for the Phase II documentation of institutional sampler collections has been provided by the National Endowment for the Humanities.
